specific advanced-level training for arbitrators
on the subject remains limited and time
consuming.

ICC provides
business views on UN transport treaty
The International
Chamber of Commerce has issued a statement on a
United Nations treaty that will provide
uniformity for the international carriage of
goods.
The draft Convention on the International
Carriage of Goods was adopted by the UN General
Assembly in December 2008 and will be signed at
a ceremony in Rotterdam in September 2009. The
treaty will be informally known as the
“Rotterdam Rules.”
This treaty is an attempt to provide
harmonization for the law governing the
transport of goods by sea, which is presently
subject to a number of different liability
regimes.

investment as environment protectors |

Writing in the
Polish Warsaw Business Journal, on the occasion
of the UNFCCC in Poznan, ICC Secretary General
Guy Sebban urged negotiators to bear in mind the
inextricable link between climate change and
trade and investment. Mr Sebban also highlighted
the need for strong protection of intellectual
property rights to ensure private sector
investment in new technologies. |

ICC calls on G8 to
avoid economic nationalism
”The G8 summit
should resist pressures to resort to economic
nationalism and should further strengthen
international cooperation to meet the challenges
posed by the global recession, climate change
and product counterfeiting, the International
Chamber of Commerce (ICC)” urged Italian Prime
Minister Silvio Berlusconi. ”We stressed to the
prime minister the importance of resisting
protectionist pressures, which would only lead
to a deeper and longer world recession,” ICC
Honorary Chairman Marcus Wallenberg said
following the private session.
